British health advocates push to ban smoking in cars in presence of children

Adam J. Graham, head of Child Health School at the Oxford University Balliol College declared that government should implement the ban on smoking in cars in presence of children. During the annual meeting of Pediatricians in the Royal College of Pediatrics, Prof. Graham stated that children are the future of the nation, therefore their health needs to be protected from various hazards, including secondhand smoke.

He said the government should stop shifting the responsibility for child health to the shoulders of pediatricians, but should take measures to prevent minors from exposure to second hand smoke since children’s health is of highest priority for the country. The spokesperson for the Health Department declared that smoking legislation would be reviewed and possibly amended next year.

He said the Department strongly recommends smokers to avoid lighting up while driving their vehicle in presence of minors. Prof. Graham mentioned that only negligent parents can light up in presence of their children letting them breathe the smoke and expose them to risks of various health complications, including asthma, ear infections and other diseases.

"If you are used to light up with your children around you, why don’t simply offer them a drag too?," he stated pointing to the fact that it is even more dangerous to be exposed to smoke than be a smoker. Meantime, similar ordinance to ban smoking in cars in presence of minors under 18 years have been successfully implemented in California, Cyprus, South Australia and New Brunswick (a province in Canada).

Dr Anna Gilmore, vice chairman of the anti-smoking organization ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) and chief examiner of tobacco regulation policies in the UK praised the comprehensive backed a complete ban on smoking in vehicles. She compared cars with small boxes because of the lack of fresh air in them and said that lighting up just a single cigarette inside a car even with all windows completely open prompts such a concentration of smoke inside that is twice as more as in the pub after a whole evening of patrons’ smoking.

ASH vice-chairman said that car smoking is not hazardous only for children but also for adults too, particularly those who have been already related by smoking-related diseases.

The car smoking restriction was unexpectedly supported by the Road Policing Unit, whose spokesperson said that smokers loose concentration on the road while lighting up and smoking their cigarettes. She added that smoking in cars should be regarded as "dangerous driving" equally to using a mobile phone while driving, since it increases road accidents probability because of lack of attention to the road and traffic.

However, Simon Clark, chairman of FOREST (Freedom Organization for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco) declared they are also against children’s exposure to secondhand smoke, but car smoking ban would become a pure waste of taxpayer’s money on enforcement.

He said that smokers should simply switch air conditioning system on to blow out the cigarette smoke and let the fresh air inside the vehicle. He added that health advocates should stop making smoking the most dangerous thing in the world and take care of other issue.
