Electronic cigarettes: a controversy of the 21st Century

Electronic cigarettes have recently gained a booming popularity in the US as many smokers were lured by the claims that these gizmos are smoking cessation tools of a new generation. However nowadays, e-cigs manufacturers state they have not named their goods as cessation devices, but only as alternative to usual cigarettes. However, e-cigs are still controversial as their safety raises many questions.

Nevertheless, the fact that electronic cigarettes have not been scientifically examined and approved for human consumption has prevented countless smokers from purchasing them.

The feedback of public health officials and antismoking activists has varied from appeals for thorough tests to annoyance and skepticism. Many scientists stated the claims of e-cigs’ safety are a myth in order to mislead potential buyers, because each component of these products has never been examined for safety alone of in combination with other components.

Moreover, the FDA has recently banned the exportations of e-cigarettes coming mainly from China famous for its questionable products, where e-cigs production was launched several years ago.

Karen Riley, the FDA spokesperson said that electronic cigarettes have not been approved; therefore they could not be exported to the US as they represent a risk for humane health.

However, a large number of e-cigs have managed to reach the country stores where they are currently sold in many flavor variations.

Paying a hundred of dollars, buyers get a starter kit that includes a battery-operated device, looking similar to a cigarette, cartridges containing flavored nicotine and propylene glycol, a substance that produces mist simulating smoke. Among flavor variations there are tobacco, apple, cherry, menthol and others.

Propylene glycol is a component of many compounds, among which is antifreeze and a special liquid for producing fog in night-clubs or theaters. According to the FDA classification, propylene glycol is classified among substances “generally recognized as safe” for humane consumption. However, Prof. Stanley Mitchell, president of Nicotine Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh said that there have been no tests concerning the safety of inhaling heated propylene glycol in compound with nicotine and flavor additive.

Medical authorities as well are concerned that the fruit flavoring contained in e-cigs will attract children to trying these gadgets as they are easy accessible.

Head of Seattle Hospital for Children, Prof. Bernard Franklin said that the fact that electronic cigarettes resemble conventional cigarettes in many ways but are much more easy to get would probably lead to many teenagers start using them and get the nicotine addiction.

Distribution and consumption of electronic cigarettes has already been prohibited due to safety concerns in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong, whereas other countries have banned their advertising.

As regards the United States, the exportations of e-cigarettes have been halted, but some authorities like Senator Frank Lautenberg, have called the Food and Drug Administration to ban the sales of these products until they are approved to consumption by scientists.
