Federal tax on cigarettes

Victoria Smithson usually lights up only when she faces some difficulties and problems to overcome. The 40-year-old Topeka resident admitted she has been smoking for 20 years. Her husband also smokes and they try to save every cent in order to buy their favorite cigarettes.

And nowadays it would become even harder for them since the cost of cigarettes has grown and would grow more on April, 1 when the recently signed federal excise tax on cigarettes comes into force.

Therefore, with all the problems in the national economy, enormous taxes and public smoking bans people like Mrs. Smithson come to the wise solution to give up smoking.

"It would be great stress form me to give up since smoking calms my nerves," Mrs. Smithson complained.

She said that the government had no right to increase their taxes and at the same time ban them from smoking anywhere than homes and smoking shops since the smokers always paid for their right to smoke and thus should have at least some basic rights.

Marisa Spring the coordinator of American Cancer Society in Wichita said that the number of quitters is expected to double.

She said that according to fundamental economic principles, when the cost of a product grows the consumption tends to decline. She also mentioned several researches proving that the price factor emerges to be the most important one for those smokers who are trying to rethink their habit.

The federal government decided to increase the excise tax on cigarettes in order to fund additional health insurance program for the children that would provide medical policies for minors from poor families.

The Topeka-Capital Magazine journalists have recently conducted a survey, asking smokers they met in various places about their plans after April, 1.

Almost 50 people agreed to share their opinion with the reporters. Many of them admitted they would give up smoking.

One of the respondents, Tommy Dahl complained that he had bought a carton of Marlboro Reds and paid 40 bucks for them. He said that he was usually buying 10 cartons each month however with the enormously increased cost of cigarettes he decided to switch to using tobacco for pipes because his monthly expenses at cigarettes would be almost the same as his monthly payments for a car he bought for his wife.

The federal tax increase coming on April’s Fools Day would raise the cost of all tobacco products. Cigars snuff, and tobacco for chewing and rolling – all of these products would cost much more than their current price. However, the price hike for these products would not be as severe as in case of cigarettes.

Another surveyed, Jim Donovan said that he simply did not understand why he should pay for other people’s kids because he has his own children and he used to work on two jobs to pay for their health insurance.

Others complained that the government was unfairly taxing only them instead of drawing their attention to other harmful things like booze or fats.

John Boyle said that he has been sick and tired of all those taxes on cigarettes and declarations of Public Health officials regarding that health complication related to smoking cost government millions every year. He said that he has seen 40-year-old smokers breathe much better comparing to the obese teenagers who were twice as young as those smokers. So the question is why not to tax fat people too because the government spends the same amount of money on fat people’s health complications.

Kansas authorities declared that they have been concerned by the fact that in case with cigarettes they tax mostly the people with low-income.

The most part of smokers have an estimated income of around $20,000 each year.
