Tests confirm presence of toxic chemicals in e-cigarettes

According to laboratory analysis by the FDA experts, electronic cigarettes contain several hazardous chemicals including carcinogens and ethylene glycol.

The results of laboratory investigation, revealed last Wednesday, conflict with statements of various e-cigs makers and distributors, claiming that their goods are safer and healthier substitute to conventional cigarettes, and the vapor from their products is not hazardous, since it contained only propylene glycol, a substance safe for humans and used in clubs to make an artificial smoke. When user inhales through the device, the battery heats the nicotine which user inhales and exhales a vapor.

But the Food and Drug Administration scientists expressed their deep concerns over the safety of electronic cigarette citing the lack of information regarding the content of the devices and influence of the chemicals contained in the cartridges on humans.

The experts tested 20 samples of cartridges that contained liquid nicotine manufactured by leading electronic cigarette distributors: NJoy and Smoking Everywhere.

The tests showed that the major part of the cartridges had increased levels of nitrosamines, a type of carcinogens found in many tobacco products and related to principal causes of cancer. Moreover, cartridge from Smoking Everywhere electronic cigarette contained diethlyene glycol, a chemical, toxic for humans, commonly used in antifreeze and contributed to many deaths when was illegally changed for glycerin in toothpaste.

The research leader, Dr. Sharfstein admitted that they haven’t identified the particular impact of diethlyene glycol and nitrosamines on humans when it is heated and inhales, however said that those chemicals present a hazard to health.

The reaction of Electronic Cigarette Industry was prompt, as the e-cigs makers stated that the analysis wasn’t broad enough to provide valid and trustworthy results. They also underlined that they do not sell their products to individuals under 18 years old.

Jack Ledbetter, chairman and CEO of NJoy said that the products were tested by an independent company and proved them to be reliable and safer substitutes for conventional cigarettes, however refused to release the results of those tests.

Electronic cigarettes, made in China, are not subject to quality standards or control. The research by the FDA also showed that the amount of nicotine contained in the cartridges differed from the amount stipulated on the labels. Several labels on the cartridges even stated that they had no nicotine inside, what was a lie, analysis demonstrated.

The FDA has detained at least 50 shipments of e-cigs, and called the devices to be misleading for smokers who want to give up. However, despite all efforts, the electronic cigarettes can be easily found at online stores and specialized kiosks in shopping malls across the country. The agency denied saying whether it would ban those devices completely or just impose restrictions, as in case with tobacco products.
