Germans were allowed to light up in pubsGermany is one of the last countries in EU that lingers with introducing of smoking ban that still remains unclear. Recently, authorities discussed the amendment to suspend veto on smoking inside Rhineland-Palatinate pubs that have only one room. In Germany the ban was launched on January 1st. It prohibits to light up in public places such as train stations, airports, offices, schools and other public buildings and partially allows in pubs, restaurants, coffee houses and discotheques that have designated rooms with a special exhaust system. Bar owners claimed that this ban could lead them to bankruptcy, as almost 80% of their visitors are smokers. They said that almost all one-room bars don’t have additional place to equip smoking places that is why it is hard for them to respect the law and maintain their revenues. Winfried Krahwinkel is an owner of one-room bar said: “We are not against the ban. We just want to have the freedom to tell our customers that this is a bar for smokers so that visitors can decide whether to come in or not”. Smokers located in Thuringia have the freedom to light up, while in Saarland the ban was launched on February 15th. |
