Really bad news for African smokersThe Republic of South Africa becomes almost total free of tobacco smoking. The law that prohibits to tobacco lovers to light up even being out-of-doors, home or in their car has been launched. Henceforth any attempt to smoke nearer than a stabled distance from window, doors or entrance to public places is considered as law-breaking. Fine is impressively high- 500 rand that is equal to 70 American dollars. Smoking is banned even at home. Those who like to light up are not allowed to smoke in their homes if there are or can be present children or that room is designated for children for doing homework or playing. Also, it is prohibited to use tobacco products in personal car if there a child younger than 12 years old is present. RSA employers must be very attentive to their smoking employees. Employers will pay fine of 100 rand (15 000$) if they do not protect non-smokers of cigarette smoking. Minors who are not 18 years old are not allowed to enter any public places (clubs, restaurants, hotels, cafes etc) if that place is designated for smokers. It is also banned to place insignias “lights” or “mild” on packs of cigarettes. What can be said about this situation? It is up to state government what rights to protect and what to ignore, but these rules affect smokers’ liberty surely. It is not fair to exclude this part of society as it is something “bad”. |
