Europeans want safer smokingTobacco manufactures are asked to change the producing of their cigarettes into safer one because of high amount of cases of fire accidents registered annually all over the world caused by cigs. Every year, damages resulted from house fires grow to millions of dollars and sometimes deaths of people. European Commission plans to introduce implementation of fire safe cigarettes to European countries too. Commission hopes that this will prevent and minimize the accidents caused by flames. Fire safe cigarettes are self extinguishing if not puffed away for some time. This is one of the last innovations in tobacco industry. Canada and several US states, including New York, Illinois, California and New Hampshire, have brought in restrictions forcing tobacco manufacturers to change their cigarettes. This is an indispensable adaptation because its results are disastrous. Only in Europe every year more than 2,000 people are killed and a further 7,300 injured in house fires that are caused by not blew up cheap cigarettes online. Initiator is Irene Oldfather, the Labour MSP, who supposes that this change is to save lives but not another move against smokers. She said: “This is about reducing fire hazards, particularly for vulnerable and elderly people. People may be put at risk who are not smokers but who live in apartments and flats near to smokers.” Also she added: “This is not unfair to smokers who have the right to smoke as a personal choice, this is making it safer for them and for others.” But Neil Raffety, of the smokers' group Forest, said: “Smokers should have a choice. If any change to the product makes it less palatable, that is not very fair to smokers. Smokers need to be responsible and I am sure that most smokers would be sympathetic with the aims of these, so-called safer cigarettes but, at the same time, it should not be at the cost of the product the smoker wants to buy.” As it was affirmed by Chris Ogden, a director of the Tobacco Manufacturers Association, tobacco producers sustain the program of safer cigarettes, but only if the right solution could be found. Producing of such cigarettes must be tested in different conditions and circumstances and only after achieving of a definite positive result their production can be regarded as to be obligatory. Chris Ogden said that most reasonable point in producing of these kinds of cigarettes is usage of thinker paper. Although, these smoking products will modify its nicotine and tar consistence and cost of these changes will influence the prices that consequently will affect on smokers’ pocket. Mr Ogden said: “Any change in production methods will incur costs that go without saying. We all want the product to be as safe as possible, but it has to be based on a realistic standard, not something imposed on us.” |
