Scientists find smoking gene

A smoking gene which addicts people to nicotine has been discovered.

The achievement opens the way to new treatment methods to help smokers kick the habit.

Everybody knows the health risks. Each year smoking kills about five million people around the world.

Today an international group of scientists states they have found a link between susceptibility to nicotine dependence and a gene mutation, called an SNP.

More than 80,000 volunteers took part in the team’s the study. People were asked whether they were still smokers or had smoked and, if so, how many cigarettes a day they used.

About 300,000 SNPs were analyzed from more than 10,000 smokers.

The mutation was found out in heavier smokers.

Dr Kari Stefansson, co-author of the team’s report of Icelandic firm de CODE genetics, said: “Not only have we made a convincing link between a single SNP and a behavioural disorder - greater smoking quantity and addiction to nicotine - but also demonstrated how this risk factor translates into risk of lung cancer and PAD (peripheral artery disease). This is an important advance that we will use in our diagnostics programs to develop means to enable individuals and doctors to better understand and cut the risk to their health.”

Dr Stephen Chanock from the US National Cancer Institute, said: “We may be able to evaluate smoking-cessation treatments informed by knowledge of a person’s genetic predisposition to nicotine addiction.”
